About us
The first port in Bristol was established in Roman times and during the 18th and 19th Century the thriving port dominated the city centre. As vessels increased in size and draft navigating the river into Bristol became more difficult so a new dock basin was established at the mouth of the River Avon at Avonmouth in 1870. Avonmouth Docks flourished through the 20th Century. Again, as larger vessels were built a new dock was needed to handle them and Royal Portbury Dock was opened in 1978.
The Bristol Port Company was created in 1991 when entrepreneurs Terence Mordaunt and David Ord acquired The Port of Bristol from Bristol City Council. They have fulfilled their promise to build a thriving modern port. Through the injection of over £450 million of investment in technology, equipment and facilities, they have attracted new businesses, created new opportunities for existing customers and created work for the company's employees and thousands of other people across the area. They continue to work with the Management Team to ensure that The Bristol Port Company is ready to take on the challenges of the future.
