Counter Pollution

Principal causes of pollution are leaking ships side valves, cargo/bunker overflows and pumping engine room bilges. It is therefore recommended that sea valves/overboard discharges (which should be shut) and ballast/cargo/bunker/bilge operations are checked thoroughly before arrival and again prior to operations commencing.

In the event of any pollution occurring, the following actions should be taken: –

  1. Immediately suspend all cargo and bunkering operations
  2. Close all manifold valves
  3. Inform jetty operator on the quay and oil basin controller
  4. Inform VTS Centre on VHF Ch. 14 or telephone (01179) 822257

If the port company assesses that the action taken by the master is inadequate, then further counter–pollution measures will be initiated using on–site, regional or national assets.
