Navigational Information

Vessels bound for Bristol from the west embark pilots at the boarding area off Barry (South Wales), about 25 nm from the docks. Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels over 85 m LOA and for all vessels over 70 m LOA carrying dangerous substances in bulk.

Many ships will need to use tugs to enter the docks. Towage is provided by independent tug companies. Tugs generally meet vessels on their approach to the locks in the area called King Road. Deep draught vessels, both inward and outbound, must also take an escort tug to and from the English and Welsh Buoy.
