Port Approaches
The approach to the port provides a reasonably wide channel, which is well buoyed and lit. The channel becomes restricted in the area called King Road close to the east of Portishead Point. The tidal ranges and rates here can make the approach to Royal Portbury and Avonmouth Dock challenging. Tidal streams generally run in the deepwater channel and can reach a maximum of 4–5 knots. The spring tidal range in the estuary is exceptional and can be as much as 15.0 metres.
