Permit to Work System

If any vessel requires to undertake additional work, (other than cargo operations), whilst alongside, then permission for the specific work should be requested by the master or his agent.

Requests for all permits should in the first instance be addressed to the VTS Centre (Telephone: +44 (0) 117 9822257).

The VTS Centre will then arrange for a port officer to visit the vessel in order to assess the work. The permit will only be completed after the site visit has been carried out, and the method statement and risk assessment for the work has been considered.

Any additional requirements/counter measures should be clearly noted on the permit.

Vessels are required to have their own "permit to work system". This should be completed and attached to the Bristol Port Company Permit before work commences.

An indemnity form, obtainable from the officer visiting the vessel, should also be completed where a third party, e.g. a contractor, is carrying out work.

Any additional requirements/counter measures should be clearly noted on the permit.

Permits are required for the following work whilst alongside in port:

  • Hot work
  • Cold work
  • Bunkering/ oil waste transfer
  • Tank cleaning
  • Immobilisation of engines
  • Diving work
  • Working on the quay edge
  • Confined Spaces
