2. Precautions when Working Beside Water

Back <<<

If you fall in the water in a dock it may be difficult to get out! There is no bank or beach to swim to, only a vertical wall. However, ladders and steps are located at various places in the dock walls. There are also ropes or chains suspended near the water surface in most locations – try to note those in your area.

If the job is being carried out near the water’s edge check that there is a lifebelt handy. If not, ask your employer to arrange for one.

DO NOT jump in the water after someone who has fallen in unless you are a qualified lifesaver or a strong and experienced swimmer. Throw the person a lifebelt while holding the end of the attached rope and pull him to a ladder or steps. Under no circumstances should you jump into the tidal waters of the River Severn.

DO NOT work with tools or equipment clipped to waist belts or holsters when working at the waterside. You will sink like a stone if you fall in!

Wear a life jacket or safety harness if working over water. Particular care is required near tidal waters because of the range of the tide and the speed of the currents.
