The redevelopment of Avonmouth Dock is now well advanced following the completion of the Portbury expansion. Investment in high quality undercover storage and new cranage for the handling and storage of a variety of bulk and breakbulk cargoes has resulted in significant additional tonnage.
Cargoes discharged at common user berths include:
Fertiliser
One of the major fertiliser producers/importers, Yara UK Limited, import c100,000 tonnes of bulk product from Europe for bagging/processing/distribution.
Coal
In addition to its 500,000 tonnes E.ON UK imported through Portbury Dock in 2007, 150,000 tonnes was imported in handy size vessels at Avonmouth. The coal generator, International Power, is also utilising Avonmouth for the storage of coal.
Grain
Grain importers have taken advantage of new storage at Avonmouth, some of which is now being utilised for the storage of milling wheat for Rank Hovis. Organic grains are also being discharged and stored for a number of companies, including Saxon Agriculture and Feed Factors. Shipments for ADM Milling are discharged and then transferred directly to ADM's Avonmouth Mill for processing.
Export grain is also able to be handled at Avonmouth, utilising a twin hopper elevator, rated at 400 tph.
Animal Feed
Market leader, Arkady Feed, utilises Avonmouth for the discharge and storage of its European coaster traffic.
Aggregates
Various grades of aggregate/pumice are handled for a number of customers, including Conexpo, which imports c100,000 tonnes per year from Ireland and Tarmac Topblock, which discharges shipments of pumice.
Peat/Bark
Coaster shipments of bark are received for Melcourt Industries from Northern Spain. Peat, in bales and bulk, is imported from Ireland and the Baltic.
Bentonite/Magnesite
Both commodities are imported for Minelco, which also utilises space within W Shed for the storage of 4,000 tonne shipments.
Export Glass
The recycling company, Recresco Limited, operates an export terminal from Avonmouth Old Dock, where glass is received, crushed and colour sorted prior to shipment.
