Avonmouth Liquids

An important mainstay of tonnage at Avonmouth is petroleum and other bulk liquids.

The Avonmouth Oil Basin has 4 berths serving companies that have bulk storage on the dock estate for:

  • petroleum
  • molasses
  • liquid fertilisers
  • orange juice

The Oil Basin can handle vessels up to 40,000 t dwt.

Half a million tonnes of petroleum products are imported annually via a 4 berth common user system delivering product to exchange manifolds and from there, onto terminal operators Esso, Bristol Oil Storage Ltd (Chevron) and the Oil & Pipeline Agency. The common user pipe system is capable of simultaneously discharging 4 vessels at any one time using up to 4 chiksan discharge arms per berth.

Westway Terminals (formerly SvG Intermol) has a terminal handling molasses and liquid fertiliser and utilise Berths 1 & 3 on the western side of the Oil Basin.

In 2002 the newly built Continental Juice Terminal received its first commissioning shipment of 8,000 tonnes of orange juice concentrate. The juice is pumped the short distance to the storage terminal via special pipes situated at Berth 3.

Bristol Aviation Fuel Terminal

In May 2003 the first petrochemical berth (Berth 7) in Royal Portbury Dock was opened. Berth 7 has been specifically designed for the importation of aviation grade Kerosene in vessels of up to 120,000 dwt.

Over 1.2 million tonnes of aviation Kerosene is discharged annually directly from the berth into the pipeline and storage network managed by The Oil and Pipelines Agency.

The opening of Berth 7 leaves an opportunity to construct another berth for liquids, LNG or dry cargo within Royal Portbury Dock.
