Located adjacent to S berth in Avonmouth Docks the Fresh Produce Terminal was built in two phases. The first phase opened in January 2003 consisting of 9 independently temperature controlled chambers, receiving and delivery halls and 8 dispatch bays. The capacity of the terminal was 8,000 pallets.
In March 2005 the second phase of the terminal became operational with an additional 6 chambers and a larger receiving hall. This increased the terminal capacity to 14,500 pallet spaces. Investment in the terminal totals £14 million.
Vessels berth immediately adjacent to the facility at S berth where palletised cargo is discharged by quay cranage and moved immediately into a temperature controlled receiving hall. All products are then scanned and barcoded using an in house computer system. Radio data terminals are used which enable real time status reporting. The system tracks the location and status of each pallet until it is redelivered to road transport.
Bristol is in a unique position being, on average, 40 miles closer to the supermarket regional distribution centres than any other port terminal. Bristol Port also has its own dedicated motorway junctions giving quick access to the large consumer markets in the Midlands, South West and West London.
At present the terminal handles fresh produce from a number of exporting countries. During the Northern Hemisphere's off season imports are handled from Chile, Argentina & South Africa. During the Northern Hemisphere season products are imported from the Eastern Mediterranean. Products handled include grapes, apples, pears and citrus.
