The Bristol Port Company owns and operates the docks at Avonmouth and Royal Portbury, a general cargo port with some 3,000 commercial vessel movements each year, vessels ranging in size from coaster to post-Panamax.

The incumbent Deputy Harbour Master is retiring in 2021, and the Harbour Master is planning to follow in 2023. The opportunity has arisen to recruit the future Harbour Master, who will gain the local knowledge and appropriate experience through a period in the Deputy Harbour Master role.  Both roles encompass the full span of responsibilities articulated in the Port Marine Safety Code (PMSC), ranging from VTS and pilotage provision, towage and conservancy, to lock maintenance and operation, and oil terminal management.

Applicants will have an appropriate marine background, with a good working knowledge of the PMSC and harbour operations, and experience of managing a diverse department of some 80 persons. Sea-command is desirable, as is previous experience of working in the port sector.

There is a competitive salary and benefit package, and the successful applicant will need to be located within an appropriate distance of Bristol.  Expressions of interest and CVs should be sent to:
