Bristol Port are on the search for new Port Operations apprentices to join the team.

When The Bristol Port Company took over in 1991, one of the objectives was to change the way in which the traditional ‘docker’ role was perceived. The Port Operative Scheme, developed shortly after, became the first of its kind in the whole of the UK, allowing apprentices to not only build a solid foundation for a thriving career but also gaining recognised qualifications in the form of an NVQ. After this initial successful launch, other disciplines followed with apprenticeships in Marine, Mechanical, Warehousing, Electrical, Motorshop and IT. Now over 30 years later, with over 600 people having joined as apprentices with many progressing on to senior management roles, the scheme continues to be a success. This March sees the scheme open up again, as the Port looks to take on its next cohort of Port Operative apprentices. Training Manager, Nick Venn, who started as a Port Operative apprentice in 1993 said “It is a great opportunity, not only are you gaining recognised qualifications, but you are setting yourself up for a great career, learning multiple skills and gaining experience whilst earning a decent salary which will rise on completion.”

Recently, the Port was pleased to offer congratulations to a group of 5 apprentices who have completed Level 2 of their apprenticeship. This means they can now progress to the next stage of the scheme.
