Removal of Crane 44, Avonmouth Dock

Published: Thursday 19th January 2023

Please be aware that The Bristol Port Company is removing the redundant wide-span gantry crane at the Avonmouth Container Terminal. Crane 44 has reached the end of its useful life and it will be taken down and all materials recycled. A specialist contractor has been engaged.

This notice is to advise local stakeholders that a key part of the project is a controlled collapse. The crane legs will be pulled over, and the crane’s main structure will fall rapidly to the ground. The operation has been undertaken many times before with other similar structures and by the same contractor. Please do not be alarmed by a single loud noise from the Avonmouth dock estate when the controlled collapse happens. The controlled collapse is scheduled to take place between 1345 and 1445 on Sunday 22nd January 2023.
